CONSERVATION SAFARI IN THE KALAHARI
Behind the scenes of South Africa’s largest private Big 5 game reserve
Conservation Safari in the Kalahari
Only recently, the largest Big 5 game reserve in South Africa opened its doors to travellers, making it a real insider tip among safari lovers. With an area of 240,000 hectares, it is almost three times the size of Berlin. Besides the Big 5 it is also home to numerous antelopes, zebras, giraffes, cheetahs and the rare African wild dog.
Inspired by the excellent feedback of the guests of our conservation safari at the Garden Route, the Eco Kalahari Camp launches in March 2020. With it travellers now also have the opportunity to experience a unique eco safari in the still unspoiled wilderness of the Kalahari.
Participate in the life of a ranger, look behind the scenes of the valuable wildlife conservation work while enjoying plenty of time with observing the animals. Watch meerkats greeting the sun in the morning, the colourful gathering of grass eaters in the typical Kalahari saltpans and if you are lucky you might watch the magnificent Kalahari lions on a hunt.
Early in the morning you hop on the game viewer to search for lions, wild dogs, oryx, zebras and elephants. A regular game count is important to keep an eye on the balance of predators and prey animals. Also you will assist the team with activities such as poaching patrol or clearing alien vegetation. Depending on what is going on in the reserve, you will also be on hand for wildlife relocation or veterinary treatment.
As the reserve is particularly committed to the conservation of endangered species, you may be lucky enough to see a number of rare animals such as black rhinos, cheetahs, pangolins and vultures. To better study the behaviour of the shy and nocturnal animals, you and your ranger team set up camera traps. Of course you also have plenty of time to observe and photograph the animals on your daily game drives. The experienced rangers will tell you a lot about them and their fascinating life in the desert.
Back at camp you will be spoiled with excellent South African cuisine. To round off an exciting day, enjoy inspiring conversations by a glass of good wine around the cosy campfire before falling asleep in your cosy tent under the fascinating starry sky of the Kalahari.
Located in the Northern Cape, the Ranger Safari can be perfectly combined with a trip through South Africa, Namibia or Botswana.
Be one of the first visitors of the new Ranger Safari in the only Big 5 game reserve in the Kalahari. We will be happy to plan your individual and tailor-made trip in Africa.
